Play Area Studio, VIAST Holiday Tour Stop #3

Sheila Eckman
Play Area Studo

I have always loved geography and maps.  Several years ago I began to collect discarded maps and atlases.  The colors, designs, and images are beautiful, especially in the older maps - cartographers are great artists!  I’ve only just begun to experiment with different ways to use maps and vintage photos in my art.

Wabisabi Studios, VIAST Holiday Art tour stop#17

WabiSabi Studios is the workspace shared by Alex and Jean Echevarria.  Having lived and married in Japan, the Asian aesthetic is central to Alex' work in carved concrete sculptures and Jean's in reduction woodcut prints.  Wabisabi refers to the beauty of natural expression complete with imperfection and simplicity.  For more images of their work, visit
